Visit to CNR data center

Before the visit, we will present the construction of the high-performance computing cluster operated by the Naples branch of IAC-CNR. The cluster comprises 4 Dell PowerEdge R750 control nodes, each equipped with 2 Intel Xeon CPUs, and 25 Dell PowerEdge R750XA compute nodes, each featuring 2 Intel Xeon CPUs and 4 Nvidia A30 GPUs. The system provides a total computational power of approximately 3,200 CPU cores and 2.4 PFLOPS of FP32 GPU performance.

Each control node is configured with 512 GB of RAM, 500 GB of system disk, and 7 TB of local storage, while each compute node features 1 TB of RAM, 500 GB of system disk, and 7 TB of local storage. Additionally, the compute nodes integrate 4 NVIDIA A30 GPUs, each with 24 GB of memory. The nodes are interconnected via an InfiniBand network and share 700 TB of centralized disk storage.

The infrastructure is housed within a hot-cold containment island, with cooling managed by two refrigeration units, ensuring efficiency, scalability, and reliability. The system architecture is built on Dell components, optimized for high-performance workloads.

The cluster is managed using OpenStack for cloud orchestration, Zabbix for monitoring, and FreeIPA for identity management and authentication. Job scheduling is handled through SLURM-managed queues, utilizing batch files to efficiently distribute workloads.

Additionally, the presentation will include an overview of the cluster’s energy consumption, highlighting measures taken to enhance energy efficiency while maintaining peak computational performance.

At the conclusion of the presentation, attendees will be invited to a guided tour of the CNR Research Area Data Center (CED) in Naples, where the cluster is hosted.
