The Institute for Applied Computing “Mauro Picone” is one of the National Research Council’s historic institutes. Since 2002, its headquarter has been located in Rome, with branches in Bari, Florence, and Naples, employing over seventy researchers. The Naples branch will host the school on its final day.
About the Italian National Research Council
The National Research Council (CNR) is Italy’s largest public research organization. It employs approximately 8,500 staff members across the country, with over 7,000 dedicated to research and research support activities. The CNR’s scientific network consists of 88 research institutes and 7 departments focused on macro-thematic areas. A significant portion of its work is driven by collaborations, including international partnerships, with researchers from universities and companies. Additionally, the CNR is the largest non-university organization involved in doctoral research at Italian universities, aiming to contribute to the higher education of young people through programs characterized by high scientific standards, innovation, and research excellence.
The Institute for Applied Computing “Mauro Picone”
The Institute for Applied Computing (IAC) “Mauro Picone” is one of the oldest institutes of the CNR. The permanent staff has 95 employees, including 73 permanent and 11 fixed-term researchers and technologists, and 11 technicians and administrative officials. Many young researchers, doctoral students, and postdocs are involved in research activities. The specific mission of the institute is to develop highly advanced mathematical, statistical, and computational methods to solve problems of high relevance for society and industry in an interdisciplinary context.

Current projects and research activities
The IAC is involved in numerous national and international projects funded by the European Commission and the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking. At the national level, it actively participates in the National Research Center for High-Performance Computing, Big Data, and Quantum Computing. Within the EuroHPC framework, the IAC is currently involved, including in coordination roles, in the EoCoE Centers of Excellence for Supercomputing and Dealii-X. These activities highlight the central role of IAC-CNR in the development of high-performance models, scientific libraries, and application codes for pre-exascale and exascale environments.
Visit to CNR data center
On the final day of the school, both students and speakers will have the opportunity to visit the brand-new data center at IAC-CNR. The center houses a cluster equipped with 100 Nvidia A30 accelerators, offering a total peak performance of over one teraflops.
